Babies whose skull bones fuse prematurely face a lifetime of risky surgeries. For babies with this birth defect, known as craniosynostosis, stem cells responsible for skull growth become abnormal much earlier in development than previously suspected, according to a new USC Stem Cell study. Correcting these underlying stem cell defects could reduce the number of surgeries, researchers say.

Ultra-high-field brain scanner receives FDA approval for clinical use

The ultra-high-field 7T Terra MRI scanner at the USC Mark and Mary Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics Institute has received FDA approval for clinical use, opening up new avenues of care for patients with Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and other diseases that affect the brain.
