Pinghui Feng wanted to study a new way to strengthen the body's immunity to viruses, but no federal agency wanted to take a risk on his relatively unproven idea. A grant from the L.K. Whittier Foundation helped kick-start Feng's research, resulting in a string of NIH grants that boosted his current funding to more than $16 million.
