Physicians and researchers at the USC Roski Eye Institute have collaborated with other California institutions to show that a first-in-kind stem cell–based retinal implant is feasible for use in people with advanced dry age-related macular degeneration.

The Keck School of Medicine of USC has appointed Narsing Rao, MD, professor of ophthalmology, as the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, effective March 26. Rao, who joined the Keck School faculty in 1983, is a leading expert on uveitis and ophthalmic pathology, including ophthalmic inflammatory and infectious diseases, ocular autoimmunity and mitochondrial oxidative stress.

A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within minutes. Bystander knowledge of proper bleeding control techniques can mean the difference between life and death. Nearly 70 current medical students participated in Stop the Bleed, a national campaign to encourage bystanders to become trained to help in an emergency before professional help arrives.
